RESYNC TO THE STORIES OF HERE AND NOW

A HYBRID 12-WEEK FILMMAKING PROGRAM THAT CHANGES THE WAY YOU APPROACH STORYTELLING, YOUR WORK, AND YOURSELF

RESYNC empowers storytellers, emerging leaders, change-makers and creatives in Asia—focusing on Japan, The Philippines and Cambodia this year—with sensing superpowers that enable them to tell a new kind of stories.

WHAT IS IT?

The School of Slow Media is an immersive, hands-on mindful media lab. It is an experiential learning program focused on storytelling, media and creativity.

RESYNC is:

  • A 12-week documentary filmmaking program

  • … with hands-on field work, with online workshops on weekends, in-person clinics, coaching calls and on-going support

  • … where 90 participants from 3 countries: Cambodia, the Philippines, and Japan come together to learn

  • … and teams of 3 participants make a documentary film each, in their own local environment.

  • The films will be shown internationally at the end of the program

The ingredients for a new kind of documentary film: 12 weeks, 150 hours, 2 teammates, 1 story holder, and you

RESYNC immerses you in a hybrid, international filmmaking experience—with a method where mindfulness, peaceful dialogue and design thinking play essential parts.

In the course of the 12-week program, you and your teammates will hit the streets to film everyday stories from your place. You will plan, shoot and edit powerful mini-docs using human-centered storytelling—a unique way of telling stories where the focus is on relationships, rather than “the message” (or even “the impact.”)

You will learn skills in coming up with a story, interviewing, filming, editing, and working with others.

Your teammates will be of local and foreign origins, from a wide range of professional and personal backgrounds. You will quickly learn how to work together efficiently and effectively. There will be plenty of chances for you to get to know them, and learn from each other.

In the end, you will have produced a powerful short documentary film that showcases everyday human stories, that show us the connections we have to the place we call “home.” Through these stories we share, we will re-syncronize ourselves to the land we stand on.

LOCATIONS

The 12-week program’s weekend workshops take place online on Fridays and Saturdays. In addition to these, we will have at least 3 off-line, in-person events where we gather the local participants together with local coaches (we call them “points”). Your film project will also be in your own city where you and your teammates live.

For this year, we are having these in-person events in:

  • Manila, the Philippines

  • Tokyo, Japan

  • Phnom Penh, Cambodia

If you don’t live in these cities, it’s still possible to participate (and make films in your own city)—please indicate where you would like to join from in the application form, and we will be in touch to talk about arrangements.

Image: Why do we want to tell a story?

—is it to sell something? Is it to save the world (by making you cry?) Or, is it to feel good, by holding all the power? (“*I* know how it is!”)

Connection (to others, to our surroundings) is a basic, universal human needs. Stories help us connect with each other, and pass on our connections to our environment to the next generation.

WE CAPTURE IMAGES TO REMEMBER

Images are what we often hold on to—what will become our memory. Thus, what kind of images we create and share is paramountly important.

Additionally, you will be meeting with your teammates every week to work on your film project and for a coaching session (1 hour). • A: Yes.

  • A: In the case where you cannot make it to a learning session or your team’s meetings, we will endeavor to provide support to help you catch up, and your teammates can also help.
